A little history on PROBE...It's past battles and achievements .
This short intro is for people who care about others - regardless of species, sex, or age. Most caring people are concerned about reducing suffering and in this sense you may already be one of us...!
We therefore welcome your participation in our current initiatives for improving the invironmental conditions for both people and animals.
1995/96 saw us putting increasing pressure on the chemical industry to tell people about the negative effects of their products as well as the advantages.People are tired of being treated as fools by manufacturers solely concerned with profits without regard to the long term dangers...
PARAQUAT - FOR INSTANCE !!
is sold under various trade names including "PATHCLEAR" or "GRAMOXONE" and other titles to confuse the public.
Most people are such victims of disinformation put out by the chemical companies that they think the highly toxic dangerous chemical is already banned!! How wrong they are! It is in fact banned in Sweden, Holland and Denmark and severely restricted in Germany and the USA but NOT in the UK!
In the UK (1999) the manufacturers get round it by distributing a 20% only dilution for farmers and 5% to the general public. Unfortunately one drop of this diluted chemical can kill you, your children or your pets or animals in general.
The makers variously I.C.I, Zenica or Miracle Garden Products claim that "PATHCLEAR" biodegrades in seconds even after rain yet experiments have shown that after five days geese have died from poisoning (Cuba).Most responible governments regard paraquat based products as having a half life (half as effective) of up to 17 years.
We dont possess the funds to take legal action but at least we can redress the balance of disinformation by giving the thinking public and our supporters the straight facts as we have done on other issues since our foundation in the UK in 1990.
In 1993, we blew the whistle on a government cover-up of Mad Cow Disease and its human equivalent CJD ( Creutzfelf/Jakob Disease). With the co-operation of the TV production company FILM-IT and CHANNEL FOUR we were able to warn the public of the real dangers. (Transmitted 8pm April13th with a later repeat in August of the same year).
PROBE (Poisons Research Organisation Benefiting the Environment) works as a team with journalists/scientists and environment campaigners to better our environment for both people and animals.
PROBE is a member of the SPECIES SURVIVAL NETWORK FOR EUROPE and works together with the Environmental Investigation Agency, the RSPB and the RSPCA and other organisations monitoring the protection of threatened species - for example in the killing of elephants, tigers etc. and the illegal trade in animal parts.
We have close links with ADDA and ABC in Spain dedicated to reducing animal suffering there.
